Using our blog

I think that this classroom blog could be best utilized by adding assignments to them. I teach all subjects in the second grade curriculm. Some assignments that I would like to add to the blog in the future are for Writing, Math and Reading. For writing I would like to post writing promts for children to respond to and later post great writing pieces from the children to be displayed on the blog. For Math I would like to post questions for the students to work on at home and post answers to on the blog. The children would then be sharing thier way of thinking and problem solving. Finally for Reading I would post questions about books that were are working on in class. They would also be able to share thier personal thoughts on what they are reading independently. There are a lot of great ways to implement the blog into the classroom and I can't wait to get started.

  1. Hello my name is Erus, and I like your ideas for reading and writing, but I don't think that having them post answers to your posted problems will give you insight for their work because it will probably look chaotic using a very basic word processor. However, you could combine the writing and math idea by asking the students to explain in words how they would do it. This will probably be advanced for the children, but it will help their cognitive abilities in the end (or at least I believe it would). : )

  2. I love that you are using this blog for second grade. I think that it lends great communication lines between you and the parents of your students. I also love that you can post assignments that the parents can check and help students with. Do you expect students to post to the blog or their parents? I know that students should get started using technology early, but how do your students do with using technology? I would be concerned with them using the Internet at such a young age.

Keep us posted on how things are going!

  3. Amber, They use the internet all the time. we used google this week to research animals for a writing assignment. The students at our school are on the computers in Kinder and by the time they come to second grade they know how to use most things. I would like the students to post to the blog on their own but at first the parents would definitely need to help.

  4. Erus, you made a good point about thier work being messy. So having them state their solutins in words would be great alternative. i think that the children could do that eventually we practice it throughout the year but right now only a few of them would be able to explain their work.

  5. I like your ideas. It's very interesting to me since I teach high schoolers to see the varied ways you can use them at the lower levels.

Someone asked me on my blog about how I would handle security and privacy and I thought that was a good question especially for those teaching younger students. Will you have students use real names or assumed names or is there some way to password protect a blog?

  6. I think when I was making my blog it asked if I wanted to make it private which would be one way to help with privacy. Also students are given id numbers which they all know by heart by the time they reach 2nd grade so that could be their user name. I have a list of each studnet and their ID numbers so that could be used as well.
